Kona is home to a unique and truly amazing fishery. On a normal day, you could skip a rock across our lake-like waters and by the tenth skip your stone would be in marlin country. Due to Kona’s steep volcanic drop-off, pelagic fish swim closer to shore than anywhere else on Earth. There has been 1,000-pound marlin caught within minutes of leaving the harbor. This makes Kona unique for sport fishing, like most other areas in the world you would have to run for several hours before catching a pelagic fish.
A day aboard the Kraken starts with watching the sunrise over Hualalai volcano as we catch our bait for the day, then troll to the grounds from there. This is a great time for our guests to put up their feet and enjoy the incredible blue waters and charm of the Kona coast. It’s often on our commute to the grounds that we hook our marlin, spearfish or ono. Once Captain Cyrus finds an acceptable place to utilize the baits, the crew will begin to bridle and send baits out on lighter tackle. This type of fishing is action-packed and great for those who don’t have the patience for trolling. At the end of the day, the Kraken and her crew motor home and hang the flags of that day’s catch. Then, back at dockside we take photos and fillet your catch.
All fishing charters book up to 6 people and include 130 and 50 class fishing equipment, light snacks, water, and ice. (Departs daily at 6:30 am)
